I know that every year the World Cup is like the second coming to most of the world, and stops world events, causes riots, and so on... Much bigger to most people than the Superbowl is to Americans. But Americans couldn't care less.
The sport just isn't on our radar, at all. You're lucky to see it playing late night after the old kung fu and Steven Seagal movies on the local 'syndication channel.'

I don't mean to be pedantic, but this thread has really incited me..
Quote:
We didn't even have an special foo for the Olympics, why on earth should there be anything for football, which is a lot lesser event?
|
A lesser event? The viewwer ratings and number of fans who attend the event say otherwise..

I know no one who watches soccer, not a single person.

Only someone who lives on the moon or in America could make that claim

You make a good point.

Naxohs Serelna: Meh...I can't stand football, so I don't mind the lack of an event like this. Besides, some aspects of that industry really disgust me.
An example of this is the work done by talent scouts. Those guys pull teenagers out of school a long time before graduation because they seem to know how to handle a ball. What happens if they get injured at an early point in their career and sit there without an education?
|
These teenagers CHOOSE to go to football academies, it's their DREAM to play professional football. And they don't just take anyone who can 'handle a ball,' you have to be more than good.

It would be cool if Cantha or Tyria had a national sport (something unique and totally fictional), and there was a day where the different nations would face each other.

I am an American living in Los Angeles and I can tell you that a fairly large majority of the people I know are watching the World Cup religiously. From what I can gather, the US team has a fairly good chance this year (the best yet) and has the ability to make it pretty far and do pretty well. Granted, America has had little interest in soccer in the past. However, soccer is on the rise and taking many of the states fairly quickly . Infact, Soccer is huge in California and I mean HUGE. And to whoever said "what does soccer have to do with GW"? I have a question for you - what does holloween, christmas , or any other special event have to do with GW? Absolutely nothing - but it has plenty to do with those who play it.
PS - the world cup may not be treated like a holiday in the US but in some other countries, it may be more important than most holidays. Some countries are known to basically shut down for a couple days just to watch the world cup. Oh yeah- and you should never say that a sport like baseball is more challenging or entertaining than a sport like soccer, football, or rugby. Oh - and to whoever said they didn't know one person who watches soccer...
nevermind. That's just sad.

What's the World Cup? Yeah - Im afraid I also find Soccer extremely boring - except when they say G-O-O-O-O-O-O-A-L!! Which is like once every 40 minutes. Oh well - would be fun to have a GW sporting event.

Says it all really. I would like some sort of World Cup event, but I doubt very much that it will happen. However, some of the ignorance towards the beautiful game has been quite amusing. Shame really as the USA has a pretty good team (no Freddy Adu though which is a puzzler), extremely tough group to qualify from though.
Maybe Anet would have been a mite more enthusiastic had China qualified along with South Korea and Japan...

I agree Clarian...
If ANYTHING - they should have a FLAG/pennant of the top ranking guilds that we can wave in city to cheer for our favorite GUILD trying to win, better yet find a way to make it seem like there is a viewing stand in the hall which they fight so they can see people cheer them on with the pennants

Pretty sure Thanksgiving is USA only... I'm English and even I know about the Pilgrim fathers and turkey.

this is a very funny thread, I am an American and like soccer to a mild degree but still think it would be foolish to have some sort of soccer theme in GW, eventhough it is one of the least fictional mmorpg that I know of. Also I hope I dont need to explain the difference between the holloween and Christmas events as to spots events. that being said, Anet is an American company and the vast majority of Americans, (as u all know) like other spots.
But I understand because when i went on a mission trip to south America EVERYONE was playing soccer and making goals out of what ever
the best suggestion I've read so far is that there should be ssome sort of fisctional mini spots game in GW, like quidich in Harry Potter or that one game in FF10. u could obtain an allstar title and such and bet gold on your team. ya that would be sweet.

Who are you pulling for in the Cup? I'm rooting for my underdog team Sweden, but I seriously think Germany is going to pull it off this year.
I'd love to see a World Cup even in GW's.

My birthday happens once every four years too, but I don't think Guild Wars should institute an event to celebrate it..and why do people keep comparing lame ass soccer to holidays? Holidays are celebrated events ingame because they're *holidays* and most often people have the *day off* because its a *holiday*, nation or international, instituted by a governing body, so there's an ingame event. Soccer is not a fakkin holiday.

There was the snowball area, thats was fun and closeish to soccer/football/basketball. You ran with an item, if you were knocked down or killed you droped the item giving the opposing side a change to pick it up. best of five wins.
Using the rules setup for the dodgeball that could even be a permanent sports area.

You could make it so that when you go out to play PvE, all the monsters and baddies are kicking soccer balls at you that cause insane damage. And PvP could turn into a dodgeball tournament.
